Great Platformers

Platformers. Running, jumping, shooting , collecting, stamping on giant mushrooms. I’ve spent many hours on these activities and below are some of my favourite games to do them on:

Total Recall (NES)

Unlike the vast majority of movie tie ins then (and now come to think of it), Total Recall didn’t stink. In fact it was an amazingly beautiful game for the time. Addictive with wonderfully responsive controls, the game was for being very balanced, mistakes caused as the result of player error, rather than poor level design (which was common at the time). Universally canned by most, it’s actually one of my all time favourites.

Anubis II (Nintendo Wii)

In the follow up to the small hit Anubis, the spirit Mumm’hotep has plunged all of Egypt into evil and chaos. Anubis has been summoned to thwart Mumm’hotep and his minions. Anubis must use all his skills to navigate the challenging gauntlet of rooms, caves and topography. The games has a great lead character, with an original premise and it’s an absolutely great experience. Worthy of being far better known.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

Super Mario Bros. 3 was considered to be the best platformer of its time. There’s more than the usual left-to-right progression in a level; some stages require movement from bottom to top and right to left. There are stages where the screen automatically scrolls, which means you must continually move to keep up with the action. Super Mario Bros. 3 is an addictive game that encourages multiple playings.

Notable mentions go to:

LittleBigPlanet (Playstation 3)

Daxter (Sony PSP)
