The total global market for compatibles is estimated to account for 37% of sales.Ink prices in Western Europe have continued to rise and consumers have not switched to compatibles at the same rate as their Eastern European cousins.

Ink cartridges are a big source of profits for the printing brands. It is therefore not surprising that they often include elements that make them more difficult to copy. Most of the current printer makers position microchips on their ink cartridges to measure the ink use. Chips need to be present and in good order for printers to work. There are numerous technical difficulties associated with producing compatible data chips. As well as the technical concerns there are additional intellectual property issues involved. There are still a number of makers of copy cartridges that develop working chips. Before buying ink you need to discover if your printer has a chip reader. If so, make sure that any compatible you buy will work.

What is the reasoning behind the use of ink cartridge chips. Printer manufacturers are very clear that the chips have a legitimate use, other than making it hard to copy cartridges. The manufacturers contend that the chips are used to measure the amount of ink and therefore block customers from getting bad quality prints when ink levels are low. The chips, however are not connected to any device that gauges ink levels, rather they record information provided to them by the printer about use.

As ink has become more pricey demand for compatible inks has grown. The numbers of compatible ink brands has also multiplied. There can be significant variations in quality between the makers of compatible inks. Pay close attention to product reviews before buying.
