Applying Poker Skills to Life

I’ve been playing online poker for many years now, and spent countless hours at the table watching men at their most devious, trying to trick me out my money. While clearly one learn the ropes by doing, and therein gets better with practice at the game itself, I think I’ve also noticed over the years an increase of my awareness of people gained from these poker online interactions, one that has direct application to daily life.

The ways in which we are bound to interact with others on a negotiation level are boundless. In spots as clear as trying to haggle prices on a purchase, in finessing your way into spots you wouldn’t have normally, and other such negotiations, the ability to read and respond to people clearly has an effect crossed over from chips and felt at the casino.

Beyond that, though, I believe playing poker has increased my intuition for even just getting a general sense of a person. Small details about their dress and way of speaking (which could be interpreted as tells) tell a lot about what you can expect of them in the long run. Playing poker in some ways acts as a tuning fork for knowing who is who and what is what.
