Norway Northern Lights Holiday
The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, appears when air molecule’s in the Earth’s atmosphere collide with solar wind particles, thus transferring their energy into an amazing light show and one of nature’s rare beauties. The display of the lights vary greatly in intensity and shape. They may range from illuminating greenish yellow, dancing lights to multi colored lights across the sky.
Even when the circumstances seem to be perfect to view the northern lights, it is never guaranteed that one will witness the phenomenon. There are few things to sonsider when preparing to witness the show. A clear cloudless night is a must for the best sightings. It is also equally important to stay away from any artificial light sources, including street lights.
The best places to view the lights are such places as Iceland, Canada, Greenland and Lapland. There are two locations that lay claim to displaying the perfect light show. The Abisko Mountain Station situated in Swedish Lapland and it’s cloudless sky provides an excellent location to witness nature’s own light show. Another great location is Hotel Ranga in South Iceland.
There are certain times of the year that give one a better chance of viewing the lights.
The darkest times between November and February are ideal for viewing. Although they can be seen as early as late August and as late as mid April, the moon phases play an important role here too.
The northern lights are a fantastic display of how nature works and shows it’s true beauty. The complex nature of the event make it worthwhile to view.
