Careers in Animal Care
For the pet lover who wants to find a job working with animals in an animal care position, there are a variety of different occupations, and depending on your interests and skills, any on might be the right job for you.
The first and most obvious animal care job, for those of you are medically inclined, is the time honored veterinarian. This position is not simple though: veterinarians are required to go through at least 6 years of schooling. Truly being veterinarian is not a single occupation either - specialties more like three separate jobs. There are pet veterinarians, farm veterinarians, and zoo veterinarians. The duties for each of these specialties vary widely, as does the risk of injury and the pay. In general though, a veterinarian’s job is to assure the health and wellness of animals.
Another animal care occupation is the groomer. Groomers are responsible for keeping pets looking and feeling good. For many animals, regular grooming is essential to their health, as it combats painful conditions such as mange, which is a clumping of the hair that causes the skin to become irritated if left unchecked. Other maintenance tasks, such as trimming nails and bathing, can be seen as preventative maintenance: if they are not done regularly, complications can occur.
Pet boarders are a third animal care occupation. Pet boarders often combine the running of their doggy hotels with their own grooming service. In order to be a boarder, you need to know how to give pets - primarily dogs - food, exercise, and affection while their owners are away.
These three animal occupations, along with dog walkers, pet toy makers, breeders, and all sorts of others keep our pet world running. So if you are up to the task, you too could be an animal caretaker.
